As you may remember, we spent a few days hiking there, and since chimpanzee tracking is the main attraction, we had added it to our agenda as well, although we weren’t sure if it would definitely work out. Rwanda has four national parks: Volcanoes in the north-west (where the mountain gorillas roam and where I’m planning to go in dry season), Akagera in the east (where my tent nearly caught fire), Nyungwe Forest in the south-west, and the recently established Gishwati-Mukura in the west (which is just one year old and so far not much is known about how to visit and what to do there). I went to Nyungwe back in November together with friends visiting from the UK. It’s mostly famous for chimpanzees but other attractions also include different species of monkeys and picturesque hiking trails 🙂
Rwanda is a very small country so the number of places worth visiting is limited. Therefore, we are trying to take it slowly and not tick everything off the list too soon! One of the main attractions is undoubtedly the north-western part of Rwanda where the Volcanoes National Park is located. This is where gorilla tracking takes place but we’re leaving this adventure to next year. Still, it’s worth visiting this area even just for a weekend as the landscape is simply spectacular. Last weekend I went to South Africa to attend a course. It was taking place during this week but I’d decided to go a couple of days earlier to see old friends and do some shopping. The friends I stayed with had already made a plan to go to Pilanesberg on Sunday, and since they had space in their car, I was able to join them.
